The company has started an extensive project to digitalise it’s production management system, including full end to end stock control. The internship project will focus on the post-implementation roll out of the shop floor data collection system and completing/closing out any snagging issues.

Our client specialises in precision cutting and slitting of flexible materials for critical applications in aerospace and other demanding sectors including, automotive, space, healthcare, oil and gas and the 3D printing of composite tapes. They have achieved steady year on year growth since 2014 when they introduced precision narrow slitting of composites for aerospace.

Our client is looking for an intern to develop a strategy to enable sensoring of our machinery. This will provide us with data on machine performance, which will also highlight any potential issues caused through vibrations and irregular readings which may lead to machine failure and unplanned downtime.

The successful intern will be involved in an exciting technology trial which is scheduled for first deployment in the real world during the placement. This project will support the development of an improved design for scaled up smart manufacture. The company’s technology is housed in street side cabinets and includes communications, control electronics, firmware, server software, and, high current: switchgear; and power electronics. Work conducted by the student will aim to streamline and automate manufacturing processes to enable scale up from trial to mass production.

Desirable Skills: To be enrolled on or completed an Electrical/Electronic Engineering course which is fully accredited by the IET. To have an outstanding Mathematics academic record. This project will focus on researching and recommending data management and system tools to digitally enhance customer relationships and project management. The current CRM will not be fit for purpose as the company grows and we have a 3 month window to research & find best fit data management tools for CRM before the current licence runs out. They also want to introduce a right fit project management tool that would integrate with the CRM tool so researching the two areas and how they can best integrate to create a consolidated data management system is key. Data visualisation would also be a consideration – making dashboard(s) for easy visual analysis aiding collaborative decisions. The client is an owner managed textile business based in Stockport. The company was established in 1999 and now employs over 100 FTEs. They set out to be the UK’s first one stop shop in the garment sector, bringing together all the key garment finishing processes including labelling, printing and embroidery together in one business. The MD established his first company in 1988 and began making licensed products in 1996 (Football’s Euro 96 tournament) and reached 50,000 units per week, then repeated this for the 1998 World Cup. In 2004/5, the business consolidated onto one site and expanded operations at the current Stockport factory through the development of adjacent units.

The company has embarked on a comprehensive digitalisation programme – basically “to automate everything that can be automated” in their new factory. This involves identifying “smart” machinery that can be linked across the factory and working with a number of external organisations who each bring their particular skills to develop the required total software solution.
